Sunday is the 100th World Day of Prayer for the Missions, when Catholics across the world unite in prayer and generosity for the Church’s missionary work. Pope Leo XIV invites us to be “One in Christ, One in Mission.” Through Missio Scotland, your prayers and financial support help sustain missionary priests, religious sisters and brothers, lay catechists, and communities in need, including Missio Scotland’s projects in Albania and Ukraine. Please pray for missionaries throughout the world and give what you can. Donations can also be made online at missioscotland.com/donate

Pope Leo XIV: As we continue to keep the Holy Father in prayer following his cancer diagnosis and recent surgery, let us reflect on the sermon he prepared for the closing Mass of the meeting on “Amoris Laetitia” on October 14th, read on his behalf by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle: “Sadly, in many parts of the world today, the practice of praying together at home — before meals, at the beginning and end of the day, or on special occasions — has fallen away. Common prayer and the Sacraments play a vital role in family life because they open hearts to the action of God, enabling families to reach together places that they could never reach on their own. Indeed, they are a solid nourishment and a healing medicine. I therefore strongly urge everyone to rediscover and encourage these practices.”

Anecdote: “You’re not a white man; you’re Jesus.”  A touching story is told of a British missionary priest who lived   in a remote part of Tanzania.  He lived alone, a single white man among his African flock, speaking their language.  One day a British government official arrived on a tour of the area. The Tanzanian children ran out to welcome the visitor. They entertained the official by clapping, singing and dancing.  After the official left, the children excitedly told the missionary priest, “We saw a white man! We saw a white man!”   Some of the children said that the visitor was the first foreigner they had ever seen. The priest was amazed and exclaimed, “But I’m a white man. I’m a foreigner. But I’ve been living here with you all these years.”   One of the children said, “You’re not a white man; you’re Jesus, you are our Father.”  — Mission Sunday reminds us that transparent Christian life, as lived by this missionary, radiating the real presence of Jesus within, is the mission of every Christian. (Joseph G. Healey, M.M).

A Thought: 97% of the world has heard of Coca-Cola; 72% of the world has seen a can of Coca-Cola; 51% of the world has tasted a can of Coca-Cola. Coke has only been around 127 years. — If God had given the task of world evangelization to the Coke company it would probably be done by now!
